Lecture: “Beyond Deep Gladness: Coming to Terms with Vocations We Don’t Choose”

Frederick Beuchner’s description of vocation as being “the place God calls you to is the place where your deep gladness and the world’s deep hunger meet” has garnered significant attention and influence over the past several decades. In our current context of COVID surges alongside reckoning with systemic racism, climate change and more, reflection on who and what we are called to be and do must include space for deep sadness as well as deep gladness. Through naming and lamenting of our individual and communal traumas in worship, we make more space to experience deep gladness within vocations both chosen and unchosen.
